Planning is critical: (1) Map wet areas (kitchen/bath) before construction starts. (2) Use CPVC for hot water, uPVC for cold, and SWR for drainage. (3) Install individual isolation valves for each bathroom so you don't have to shut the whole house supply for a single repair. (4) Oversize main supply lines by one size to future-proof pressure. (5) Test all lines under pressure before plastering the walls.

Use uPVC (Unplasticised PVC) for cold water lines and overhead tanks. Use CPVC (Chlorinated PVC) specifically for hot water lines and geysers as it withstands high temperatures up to 93°C. For sewage and drainage, use SWR (Soil, Waste, and Rain) pipes. Never use standard PVC for hot water as it deforms quickly.

Main supply line from tank: 1 inch or 1.5 inch. Distribution lines to bathroom/kitchen: 3/4 inch. Taps and flush connections: 1/2 inch. Use Ball valves. They operate with a simple 90-degree turn, last for decades, and have near-zero leakage. Gate valves are now considered outdated for home use as they develop leaks over time and require multiple turns to operate.

For uPVC/CPVC, reliable brands include Astral, Finolex, Supreme, and Prince. Always ensure the pipe has an ISI mark and the correct IS standard number. Avoid unbranded or cheap pipes to prevent massive future repair costs.

For Pipes: (1) Always look for the ISI mark (e.g., IS 4985 for uPVC, IS 15778 for CPVC) stamped directly on the pipe. (2) Check for uniform wall thickness; the pipe should not feel thin or brittle on one side. (3) Look for the manufacturer's name and batch number — genuine brands always display these clearly. For Valves: (1) Ensure it has a 'Full Flow' design (the internal hole should match the pipe diameter). (2) Test the handle movement; it should be smooth, not tight or jammed. (3) Check for a brass-plated or stainless steel internal ball mechanism, as these last much longer than plastic ones.

When buying a water tank, prioritize these parameters: (1) Layering: Always go for at least 3-layer or 4-layer tanks. The outer layer protects against UV rays, the middle layer is black (to prevent algae growth), and the inner layer is food-grade white (ensures clean water). (2) Material: Look for 'Virgin Plastic' (Food-grade LLDPE). Avoid tanks made of recycled plastic as they can leach chemicals into your drinking water. (3) Thickness & Weight: A quality tank should feel heavy and sturdy; thin tanks often bulge or crack under the weight of water. (4) Lid Design: Ensure the lid is threaded (screw-type) rather than just a push-on lid to keep dust, insects, and sunlight out.
