The absolute minimum to start teaching online is a working laptop or desktop, a decent webcam or external camera, a USB microphone or clip-on mic, and a stable internet connection. Add a ring light if your room lighting is poor. These four items together cost under ₹10,000 and are enough to conduct professional-looking live classes.

A USB condenser microphone placed on the desk gives the clearest audio for online teaching. If you move around while teaching, a clip-on lapel microphone is better. The built-in laptop microphone picks up too much background noise and echo — it is not suitable for regular online classes. A microphone stand or boom arm keeps it at a consistent distance from your mouth.

A ring light is the most practical lighting solution for online teaching — it provides even, shadow-free light on your face and most models come with a phone or laptop mount. Place it directly in front of you at eye level. If you teach in the morning or evening when natural light changes, a ring light ensures consistent brightness across all your sessions.

A graphics drawing tablet is the best tool for writing equations, drawing diagrams and annotating during live online classes — it feels like writing on paper and appears on screen in real time. A small A5 or A6 size tablet is enough for most teaching purposes. Alternatively, a document camera pointed at a physical notebook is a low-cost option that works well for maths and science teachers.

Every online teacher should have a mobile data hotspot as a backup — either a dedicated 4G or 5G portable Wi-Fi router or the hotspot from a second mobile phone. Keep it connected and ready before every session so you can switch instantly if your primary broadband drops. In cities with frequent outages, a prepaid data SIM on a different network from your primary connection is the safest backup.

A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is the most important power backup for online teaching — it keeps your router and laptop running instantly when power cuts happen with no interruption to the class. A laptop UPS giving 30–60 minutes of backup is enough for most power cuts. Keep your laptop battery above 80% before every class as an additional buffer. A fully charged power bank can also keep your mobile hotspot running during cuts.

Closing the room door and windows reduces external noise significantly. Heavy curtains or a bookshelf behind you absorbs sound and reduces echo. A directional USB microphone picks up only your voice and rejects side and rear noise. Acoustic foam panels on the wall behind your monitor are the best professional solution but not essential for most teachers — curtains and a good microphone together solve 80% of the echo problem.

A 1080p Full HD webcam is sufficient for most online teaching — it gives sharp, clear video that looks professional on any platform. Place it at eye level by using a monitor mount or a small tripod on the desk — looking down into a laptop camera looks unprofessional. If you already own a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a capture card lets you use it as a webcam for much higher quality video.

Closed-back headphones are best for online teaching — they prevent your microphone from picking up the audio playing in your ears, which causes echo for students. A wired headphone is more reliable than wireless as it never drops out mid-class. If you prefer freedom of movement, wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation work well as long as the battery is charged before every session.

A proper study table at the right height prevents back and shoulder pain during long teaching sessions. The monitor or laptop screen should be at eye level — use a monitor riser or laptop stand to raise it. An ergonomic chair with back support is worth investing in if you teach more than 2 hours daily. A separate keyboard and mouse are also important if you use a laptop, as they allow you to keep the screen at the right height without bending over.
