Moving to a new city for college or a new job? This checklist covers everything a student or young professional needs when shifting to a hostel, PG or rented room in India — from bedding and study essentials to power backup gear, kitchen basics and personal safety items. Built for Indian conditions: unpredictable weather, frequent power cuts and shared living spaces.
Hostel ya PG mein pehli raat comfortable honi chahiye — bedding ka saman ghar se laana ya online order karna sabse pehle karo. Zyada mat laao — hostel room chhota hota hai aur storage limited hoti hai. Check items →
Hostel room mein padhai ke liye sahi setup bahut zaroori hai — poor lighting aur uncomfortable posture se aankhein aur back dono kharab hote hain. Study lamp aur laptop stand ye do cheezein sab se pehle leni chahiye. Check items →
India mein bijli jaana ek common reality hai — especially tier 2 aur tier 3 cities mein. Power backup gear hostel life mein padhai, sleep aur safety ke liye bahut zaroori hai. Yeh items invest karne layak hain. Check items →
Full cooking allowed nahi bhi ho toh kuch basic kitchen items hone chahiye — tiffin box, water bottle, plates aur basic cutting tools se hostel life bahut easier ho jaati hai. Hostel ka khana kabhi kabhi nahi khaya jaata — backup food items hona zaroori hai. Check items →
Shared bathrooms aur common spaces mein personal hygiene maintain karna bahut zaroori hai. Yahan sab alag-alag hona chahiye — shared personal care items se infection aur fungal infections ho sakte hain. Check items →
Hostel mein kapde dhona ya dhobhi ke paas bhejna dono common hai — laundry ka basic setup hona chahiye. Geele kapde room mein sahi se nahi sookhe toh smell aur fungus ki problem hoti hai especially monsoon mein. Check items →
Hostel mein hospital ya pharmacy hamesha paas nahi hoti — ek basic medicine kit hona bahut zaroori hai. Ghar se dur pehli baar rehne wale students ko yeh especially important hai. Check items →
Nayi jagah mein safety hamesha priority honi chahiye — especially girls ke liye. Yeh items one-time buy hain aur bahut zaroori hain. Safety ko kabhi ignore mat karo chahe hostel safe lagta ho. Check items →
India ka mausam unpredictable hai — garmi, thand aur baarish teen alag challenges laate hain. Yeh items season ke hisaab se zaroori hain — pehle apni city ka mausam dekho fir list customize karo. Check items →

क्या इस लिस्ट से आपको अपनी तैयारी में कुछ मदद मिली?
A student should carry at least 2 bedsheets, 1–2 pillows with covers, a light blanket or quilt for winters, and a mattress protector if the hostel mattress is old. In humid cities like Mumbai or Chennai, a thin cotton blanket is enough year-round. In North Indian cities like Delhi or Lucknow, a heavy razai is essential for winters.
A power bank (minimum 20,000 mAh) is the most important item for charging phones and small devices during cuts. A rechargeable LED torch or emergency light handles room lighting. For studying during cuts, a headlamp keeps both hands free. Students in cities with long outages should also consider a small UPS for their laptop.
Even if full cooking is not allowed, most hostels permit electric kettles and small appliances. An electric kettle is the most versatile item — useful for tea, coffee, instant noodles, boiling eggs and hot water. A microwave-safe tiffin box, a small cutting board and a basic knife are also very useful. Always check hostel rules before bringing cooking appliances.
Every girl student should keep a door stopper or door alarm for room security, a pepper spray (legal in India for self-defence), a whistle on her keychain and an emergency contact list saved and printed. A door knob alarm that triggers on forced entry is also a practical low-cost option. Share your live location with a trusted person when going out late.
A good study lamp with adjustable brightness is critical — overhead hostel lighting is usually poor for long study sessions. A laptop stand or book stand reduces neck strain during long hours. Noise-cancelling or isolation earphones help focus in noisy dorm environments. A small whiteboard or sticky notes for quick revision on the wall are also very effective.
Pack at least 7 days worth of clothing so you are not washing every 2–3 days. Carry a small detergent soap or liquid pouch for hand-washing, a small bucket and a clothesline with clips for drying in the room. A mesh laundry bag keeps dirty clothes organised and makes it easy to carry to a washing machine or dhobhi.
Every student should maintain a small medicine kit with: paracetamol for fever, ORS sachets for dehydration, antacid tablets for acidity (very common with hostel food), a pain relief spray or ointment, band-aids and an antiseptic like Dettol or Betadine. For girls, menstrual pain relief tablets are also important to keep stocked. Consult a doctor before using any prescription medicine.
Always carry both originals and photocopies of: Aadhaar card, college ID or offer letter, mark sheets, passport (if applicable), 4–6 passport-size photos, bank passbook or account details and the college or PG address proof. Keep digital copies in Google Drive or email as backup. A document organiser folder prevents them from getting damaged.
A USB table fan or a small personal fan is essential if the room has no AC. A cooling towel soaked in cold water provides quick relief. Light cotton or linen clothing helps significantly. A water bottle with an insulated flask keeps drinking water cool. Window curtains that block direct sunlight reduce room temperature noticeably.
Always bring your own padlock — hostel-provided locks are often old and have duplicate keys. A good quality Godrej or Yale padlock is the minimum. For valuable items like laptops and hard drives, a small personal locker or a laptop cable lock adds an extra layer. Never leave your room key in the keyhole from the inside — use a door chain or stopper.
